| As part of my application to the program, I included this Joseph Cornell inspired box piece. At the time, I was juxtaposing myself into images inspired by what I was reading at the time about female saints. Here, I chose to represent myself with Saint Lucy, patron saint of the blind and those with eye trouble. I find her story fascinating. It's a little gruesome, because she plucked out her eyes as a means towards saving herself for Jesus. Talk about dedication! She did this to deter a Roman nobleman who was in pursuit to rape her and - because of her act of devotion - impressed the lusty warrior so much that he eventually converted too. What I still don't understand is why most saints are martyrs? I can't think of one who wasn't somehow tested...a contradiction if God's love is supposed to be unconditional and Jesus died for our sins. |
